Steven Champagne - May 2024

For May’s artist highlight, we take time to shine light upon Steven Champagne.

Steven is a local artist from Marrero with an unexpected path to where he is now. In the beginning, he never wanted to be an artist or gravitated towards art. Steven was a full on skater that got the opportunity to design a skate shop on the Westbank. While in the process of its creation, an unfortunate skating accident cut those dreams short.

During his recovery he decided to use clip art from newspapers and incorporating dollar bills in them. This was the beginning of using money as a medium in his art. He recall the story of walking down Royal St and visiting every gallery to get their opinion on his first three pieces. It wasn’t until he made towards the of the street when one gallery would purchase one of his pieces for 500 dollars. This was a big part in his journey because it gave him motivation and belief that what he was doing was right.  He also appreciates his brother Kyle being present for this journey, becuase he is an inspiration, and being able to build something with his family is something he holds close to him. Steven credits two books he’s read as a major influence in him learning art : History of Modern Art by H.H Arnason and History of Art by H.W Janson. Over time, he started using resin to lock in his pieces and give everything a clean finish. He then wanted to use a currency that is not often seen or acquired. This began the use of the famous two dollar bill in his work. Steven also created his personal “Twisted Luck” brand that shows a two dollar bill being twisted in the shape of a bow tie.

From personal clients to larger exhibits, Steven has his art all over the country. He looks to continue collaborating with other studios, but you can check out his work at gallery two (@gallery.two ) which is his personal gallery downtown in New Orleans.Gallery Two has held multiple events for other artists as well as himself. Recent events include an Adidas shoe art exhibit in that Steven designed a pair of Shelltoes. We also brought ModspaceLA to the gallery in our most recent Toy Tour for charity. Make sure to stop by Gallery Two and find your favorite Steven piece.
